Communications Systems Project Paves The
Way For The Future
In a project that will go a long way in positioning City
Lights in a specialized and growing sector of the
communications market, the company is currently working on
the MBTA’s radio and CAD/AVL system upgrade job. The $
1,536,810 contract calls for City Lights to upgrade the
MBTA’s existing mobile and fixed communications systems to a
system-wide modern, hard wired and wireless communication
system. The work includes integrating fiber optic, hard
wired and emergency transmissions systems into a redundant
communications system while keeping the current system up
and running. Started October 1, 2005, the project has a
scheduled completion date of October 30, 2006.
Intended to be used for normal and emergency communication
with police and fire departments as well as routine
communications with dispatchers, T vehicles and
maintenance/repair entities, the new system is designed to
operate below and above ground under all conditions by
incorporating bi-directional antennas and hard-wired
features.
The need for this type of system was brought to light by the
significant communications systems failures that occurred
during the September 11th tragedy. It is anticipated that
this type of system will be replacing older systems
throughout the country in an effort to avoid future
communications failures.
Although City Lights is focused on electrical contracting as
the basic business profile, this project provides insight
into the diverse qualifications of City Lights and the
ability to provide specialized installations due to the
highly qualified and skilled labor work force and management
team that resides at City Lights.
